Paper Sculpture – Untitled

A visually stimulating sculpture that seeks to blur the lines between the physical world and computer simulated design.

Project Description

This piece was my final project in a Digital Fabrication class at CU Boulder. Inspired by the work of Matt Shlian, I wanted to test my modeling skills in Rhino to create a paper sculpture of my own armed with my knowledge and creativity. Using the Grasshopper plugin for Rhino, I developed my own program to create a digital model of the sculpture. In this program, the user has complete control of all aspects of the design, from grid size, pattern, and individual point manipulations that dynamically adjust based on various inputs. With this program, there are an infinite number of combinations that can be tailored to specific individual requirements.

After the digital model was done, the next step was to create a fabrication model. This involved deconstructing the model into 100 different pyramids, unfolding each one, and getting them ready for the laser cutter. I used a combination of cuts and perforations to create each piece and assembled them by hand.
